Artist Of The Week - Lori Nix

Library

I came across this slightly sinister photo a long time ago, and have kept it in my ‘amazing art’ file without ever knowing who the artist is or what the photo is about. The cool thing is, I just stumbled across some information about the artist, Lori Nix, and have learnt that these pictures are of her handmade dioramas!

Lori majored in ceramics and has been collecting miniatures and models from all over America. It can take her between 3 months to 3 years just to get the diorama perfect, as the aim is to get these little pieces as lifelike as possible. Add some dramatic lighting and some kick ass photography skills, and you have yourself an often eerie photographic illusion.

She finds inspiration in natural disasters remembered from her Kansas-based childhood, like tornadoes and insect infestations. She’s currently influenced by books on the atomic bomb, which is quite evident in her series “The City” (see photos: Library and Great Hall). There’s an often humorous aspect to Lori’s pieces, but this is revealed in a dark manner. The images produce that kind of laugh where you slightly shake your head in disappointment or disbelief of the scenario. Nevertheless, they sure do conjure up vivid story lines in the imaginations of the viewers. I especially love Parade as the absurdity of it all makes me giggle. It reminds me of this scene from Ghostbusters.

What do you think? Does Lori’s work satisfy your viewing pleasure? If so, what do you like about them? Or maybe, what don’t you like about them?

Big love & ladybugs,
