Artist(s) Of The Week - Tim Noble & Sue Webster
Let me just firstly say, I rarely left this computer for the last two days. I’ve been designing the new layout for Ivyology, with problem after problem. I left for toilet and snack breaks. I think I’ve lost weight. But, I’m as happy as a pig in shit, because I am completely satisfied with the result! So, I’m back to posting delicious content - yay!!
This week we take a peek at Tim Noble and Sue Webster. Two artists who’ve collaborated on some very intricate installations involving light and shadow. You may have seen a few of these pictures on the internet before..?

Their art is nothing short of incredible. Both Noble and Webster are England based contemporary artists who met whilst studying Fine Art in the late 80’s. They emerged into the London art scene in the mid-90’s through self-promotion involving posters of their faces pasted on the bodies of the contemporary art world’s most established duo, Gilbert and George. Their interest in the power of the media, pop culture and the late 70’s punk era is reflected in some of their pieces like $, Girlfriend From Hell and their Fucking Beautiful jewellery collection. Noble talks about his love of all things punk, “I think anything that’s a bit of a rocket up your arse, anything that kicks against the routine, against the mundane things that close down your mind, is a refreshing and good thing.”
They’re probably most notable for their light and shadow pieces made from piles of London street trash and dead animals, and their neanderthal self portraits which aim to depict beauty hidden within ugliness.

Their 35 ft high Electric Fountain made from 3,390 LED bulbs was erected in the Rockefeller Center, which replicated the movement of water. It represents Noble and Webster’s modern take on the world’s oldest form of public art, the fountain, simultaneously referencing iconic pop culture symbols such as marquee signs in Las Vegas and Times Square, and historical fountains built in civic spaces. Wouldn’t you love to see this on your way home from a big night out? One guy compared it to an acid flash-back.

You can actually purchase some of their pieces at artnet.
