How To Make A Pom-Pom Scarf
Well, not quite a scarf, more like a half-arsed scarf as it doesn’t give you any protection from the winter chill. But as you’ll see you can change that if you like, and make a real scarf. I was actually inspired by this photo which i saw in Smaggle Style awhile ago. I tried looking online to buy one but all I found was rabbit fur pom-pom scarfs - yuk. Not a fan of wearing fur. So, I decided to make my own! And it was actually quite fun! Did you ever make pom-poms as a kid? Here is how I made my pom-pom scarf/neck decoration:
What you’ll need: Scissors, wool, cardboard, pen and protractor (or a circular object to trace).
Step 1: Depending on what size pom-pom you’d like, trace a circle on a piece of cardboard. (A pom-pom that has a 7cm diameter will need a cardboard circle with a 10cm diameter.) Then trace another circle inside the big circle (this is wear you thread the wool). You’ll need to make two of these cardboard circles to make one pom-pom. Then cut them out like this;

Step 2: Put the two same-sized cardboard circles together. Cut a generous piece of wool and begin to wrap it around the doughnut shape. You don’t have to worry about the length of wool because you can cut another piece and begin wrapping again until the entire doughnut is covered. Make sure each end of the wool reaches the outside of the circle. It should look something like this;

Step 3: Now you have to slide your scissors between the two pieces of cardboard (it’s easier if you use nail scissors as they’re thinner), and cut the wool the entire way around. It should look like this;

Step 4: Cut another piece of string (about 30cm long), slide it between the two cardboard circles and tie it in a strong knot. Now you can take the cardboard off and, voilĂ ! You have made a pom-pom!

I think it would look even cooler with rainbow wool or glitter wool. I made a couple different sized pom-poms and created this… interesting ’scarf’;

If you’re really game you could make something like this! Or you could sew two on top of a beanie to make little pom-pom ears! Actually now I really want to do that! Or, you could add lots of little baby pom-poms to the ends of a scarf you already have. Or maybe you could create this funky scarf. You also might want to tie all your poms-poms closely together to make something that looks like this. The uses of poms-poms are endless!! I’m not sure where I would wear my little creation, but when I do I’ll be shaking it like a pom-pom!
Big love,
