Kegadoru In Harajuku

I was shopping online for an amazing bag (will show you once it arrives!) and happened to see a whole lot of decorative band-aids for sale. It had me reminiscing of the Japanese bandage trend which has been around for a couple years now. It all started in Harajuka, where fashion trends seem to be 10 years ahead of their time, and the kids are funky cold medina.

The trend is actually called Kegadoru which roughly translates to “injured dolls” (also known as “one-eyed virginal maid mummies”). It involves women wearing Lolita-style outfits with bandages, slings and eye patches as accessories. According to a devotee of Kegadoru interviewed by Japan’s Weekly Playboy, “When you’re covered in bandages, everybody pays attention to you and worries about you. They also provide a chance to start talking to guys, who’ll ask you how you hurt yourself, so the bandages are really, really good. One guy told me he likes seeing a thin woman’s body wrapped in bandages because it made him think about bondage, and made him want to protect me from harm.”

Weird Asia News says that the white bandages denote virginal grace, while the black ones mean wickedness. Do you think it’s completely bizarre to wear bandages as fashion accessories? I can see how you would, and that’s exactly what I love about it!

Gadling’s Matthew Firestone explains the trend: “In a country where individual thought and expression is frequently squashed by a society that values conformity and order, dressing up in bizarre fashions is one of the few outlets that rebellious teens have.”

Bai Ling (God bless this woman) used band-aids on her shins to promote her new book. The band-aids read; “MY BOOK” and “NIPPLES” - genius! I love this woman. Even though she is criticised so much in the media for her dress sense, she’s original and you never forget about her. Like Diana Vreeland once said, “too much good taste can be boring”.

These are some of the funky band-aids I found on the Internet and are like the low-key Kegadoru range of accessories. I really want the rainbow monkey ones!
