How To Change The World - 22nd May 2008

I’ve decided to do a series of posts where I show you some easy tasks on how you can change the world for the better. I think all of us have a deep yearning to “save the world” and live on a sustainable planet with people who are happy and loving. Sooo many times I’ve heard people say they want to change the world but that they’re just one person out of billions, so how could they possibly have an effect? It’s heart-breaking to hear that because every single one of us does change the world, with every action, word and thought, it’s just some of us don’t realise it yet.
As the age-old philosophy goes, “for every action, there is a re-action”. And that doesn’t mean the action stops at one re-action, those re-actions ripple through the universe for infinity. For example, you may tell an older woman in the street that she has a lovely smile, then that woman goes home feeling happy, and as emotions are contagious, her husband also feels happy, and so on and so on. Just because you don’t see the effects, doesn’t mean they aren’t happening. So what I’m trying to say is that you do change the world. You are more powerful than you think you are.
I’m going to be adding several tasks or ideas for all of us to undertake in order enhance our world. Some of them will be small tasks and some will be larger, but all of them worthwhile. This week, let’s see if we can do one or more of the following tasks;
Compliment a stranger: A school teacher once made her pupils write down something positive about every other student in the class. At the end, the teacher gave each student a list of compliments called the “appreciation list”. She found her students were much more amicable to one another after the task. Years later the teacher was at the funeral of one of the former students who had died in Vietnam. The student’s parents told her that he always kept his “appreciation list” in his wallet. After learning that, the teacher always performed that task in every class she had.
Eat sustainable foods: The Aquarium restaurant in London has a seafood menu which only uses fish species that are not endangered. They even rotate the menu so certain species don’t become too popular. Not only does this save fish under threat, it also increases awareness of the problem. I think this is such an ingenious idea and truly admirable.
Invest in a bicycle: The Netherlands are a great example of bike usage with 57% of it’s population using bikes! Not only is it great for the environment it’s great for your health too. I’d love to see a completely car-free city, and I think the Netherlands is on its way!

Sweet post! It’s nice being reminded the little things we do actually work to change the world… people always seem to ignore the ‘butterfly effect’.
I really should learn to ride a bike

What a beautiful post! I always get such a rush when I compliment a stranger since there is never an agenda, I just like making people feel good. I love your ideas and I look forward to reading more.
