The Story Behind Doctor Who & Its Audios
Just about everyone in countries such as the United Kingdom, US, Canada, New Zeeland, Australia etc should have heard of the famous science Fiction TV serial Doctor Who by the BBC! Thanks to the rebirth of the serial in 05 following a fifteen yr pause, Doctor Who is as popular as ever with episodes being transmitted on the international Science fiction channel and even on American TV channels in addition to the BBC’s broadcasts.
DW all started in November 1963 when it’s first episode aired on television taking the Dr. & his companions back into the past where they aided some cavemen to make the discovery of fire. When you take into account the all-new serial DW is currently the longest running Science fiction series of all time!
With the huge popularity of DW, the BBC started making Dr. Who Audio back in the mid 70s for cassette and LP. Initially the BBC only produced soundtracks from the original television series and then had the Doctors of the time add some binding narration for completion. It wasn’t long before the BBC decided to take the audio releases to the next level by releasing audio book episodes only for Audio release.
Additionally the Dr. Who Audio Book family was extended with the release of Audios from stories that had only appeared on the radio. Also many of the lost episodes have been re done by their original Doctors in the Audio format making them finally available to the public once more. Currently the BBC’s DW Audio collection has over fifty titles all available in quality Digital format at a reduced download price! The range spans all the way though the 1st Doctor right up until the present Dr, David Tennant. In addition Torchwood Audio and Sarah Jane Audio Books have also been added in recent times.
In today’s world audio is even more popular than ever thanks to MP3 players. With multitasking becoming more and more an important part of our lives it’s not surprising that Audio sales for both DW and in general have augmented. Another reason why folks like Doctor Who audio is because in many cases the audio stories are now read by the actors of the serial.
With the Doctor Who New serial going from strength to strength and more and more Audios being created available both from the old and new series & now from Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures as well, it looks like Dr. Who & Doctor Who Audio Books are here to stay for some time to come!
